Between April 1, 2019 and April 30, 2019, the Wheaton Police Department participated in Illinois’ Distracted Driving Enforcement campaign, bringing awareness to area residents and issuing 72 citations and 20 warning citations. Increased enforcement was part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
“Driver distraction is a persistent issue in the City of Wheaton and may have life-altering consequences,” said Wheaton Deputy Chief Bob Miller. “Issuing a citation is a proven way to get motorists to reduce distracted driving.”
During the month-long campaign (40 hours), the Wheaton Police Department issued:
- 67 Electronic Communication Device Citations
- 2 Electronic Communication Device Citations While in a School Zone
- 19 Electronic Communication Device Warning Citations
- 1 Expired Driver’s License Citation
- 1 Improper Lane Usage Citation
- 1 No Valid Driver’s License Citation/Arrest
- 1 Failure to Notify Secretary of State Change of Address Warning Citation
“Distracted Driving Awareness Month may be over, but the Wheaton Police Department will continue stopping drivers for this reckless behavior that threatens the safety of our community,” said Deputy Chief Miller.
The Distracted Driving enforcement campaign is supported through federal funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
