Oct 30    Mass Casualty Response Workshop

The Homeland Security Training Institute at College of DuPage presents a look inside two of the largest mass casualty shootings in American history: The Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, FL., and the Route 91 Music Festival in Las Vegas, NV. This important workshop will be presented by Lieutenant Douglas Goerke of the Orlando Police Department and Captain Nick Farese of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. A question and answer session will take place after their presentations. Take a look inside the responses to these two horrific attacks. They will discuss the response to these incidents and areas that they did well and lessons learned from the attacks.

This workshop is designed for law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, trauma center and medical personnel, criminal justice and fire science students, and all public safety employees.
There are numerous lessons to be learned from responding to these horrific events and this workshop is designed to understand the response from the police officers’ perspective. What did police learn from responding to these incidents, what decisions did they need to make during a critical and stressful event, and what would they do differently based upon what they have learned?
Please join us at the Homeland Security Training Institute on October 30th for an extraordinary workshop focused on Mass Casualty Response.

Orlando Nightclub Shooting: On June 12th, 2016, a lone shooter, Omar Mateen, killed 49 and wounded 53 others at the Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, FL. At the time, it was the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter in U.S. history, being surpassed the following year by the Las Vegas shooting. Orlando Police Department (OPD) officers shot and killed the shooter after a three-hour standoff. The shooter was an American citizen who had sworn allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Route 91 Music Festival Shooting: On October 1st, 2017, a lone shooter, Stephen Paddock, opened fire on a crowd of concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada, leaving 58 people dead and 851 injured. The shooter was an American citizen who fired more than 1,100 rounds from his suite on the 32nd floor of the nearby Mandalay Bay hotel. About an hour after he fired his last shot into the crowd, he was found dead in his room from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His motive remains unknown. This became the deadliest mass shooting committed by an individual in American history.
