“WHEN: The Truth About Timing"
A Book Review by Vickie Austin
(And You Don’t Have to Read the Book!)
Timing, as they say, is everything. We often think of timing as random, but what if it isn’t? What if successful timing around decisions in our work, our businesses and our lives is based more on science than on serendipity?
Vickie Austin, business and career coach and founder of CHOICES Worldwide, will share from Daniel H. Pink’s new book When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing. Bringing her popular “Biz Books Review” format to the luncheon, Vickie will capture the essence of this newly-released book by one of the most popular business writers of our time. Come enjoy the company of your chamber colleagues while discovering how to leverage the science of “When” and perfect timing for yourself.
Our Luncheon Menu includes
Tomato Bisque Soup
Grilled Chicken Breast with Picatta sauce, served with Whipped Potatoes and Green Beans or

May 17 The County Seat War: Naperville vs. Wheaton |
Very soon after 1500 DuPage citizens served in the Union army during the Civil War, the county was stricken by another north/south conflict right at home. For some years, the only important political question in DuPage was whether the county government would be in Naperville or Wheaton. Previous political affiliations and many friendships and affections were burnt up in the emotional intensity of this conflict. 2018 marks the 150th anniversary of the dispute. The story involved riots and claims of rigged elections. Presented by Bob Shuster of the Billy Graham Center Archives of Wheaton College.
This program is co-sponsored by the City of Wheaton Historic Commission as part of Preservation Month. |

May 31 Social Media & the Brain |
Social Scientists have debated the positive and negative psychological effects of computer social networks for nearly two decades. This talk will trace the history of the development of computer social networks, focusing on their effects on human psychology and brain processes. We will examine the extent to which these networks represent a fundamentally new kind of interaction that will enhance social connections, a downward spiral into isolation through artificial connections that will tear apart our social fabric, or more of a natural extension of traditional social networks. Presented by COD professor Ken Gray. |
