Golf History Starts Here in Wheaton IL

Event Description Nancy Flannery of the Wheaton Historic Commission will give a presentation on the unique role that Wheaton had on the history and development of the sport of Golf. The history of golf in the United States had some of its early beginnings here in Wheaton which at one time had eight golf courses.  The first 18 hole golf course in the USA was built in Wheaton (The Chicago Golf Club - 1895) but some of the most important early inventions for golf as well as golf architects lived and worked in Wheaton.  Learn about the mashie-niblick, the Foulis brothers, Herbert Tweedie, Charles B. MacDonald and others. 


This lecture is part of the Wheaton "Summer of Golf", celebrating the Chicago Golf Club hosting the 2018 U.S. Senior Women's Open Championship which is July 12th - 15th.
